Green Public Infrastructure for City of Abilene with Vertical Solar

Location: City of Abilene, Texas, USA

Product: M60 (20ft) PowerStack solar pole for security and lighting application, with a Verkada multi-senor camera and PowerStack LED light arm.

Integrator: STS360

Year: 2023

Project: The City of Abilene, TX had a need to deploy security and lighting at a parking lot in their community. They wanted a solution that had edge computing and cloud back-up capability. This would enable real-time reporting and reliable data capture, leading to effective monitoring. The overall desired outcome was enhanced safety, security and usability of the public space for both residents and visitors.

Challenge: The location for the required pole was not in close proximity to electrical infrastructure, and to access traditional grid supply would have meant digging up the parking lot. The City wanted to avoid this disruption to the operation of the lot if possible.

The City was looking for a solution that could deploy powered infrastructure quickly and easily, with minimised disruption to the surrounding area.

PowerStack's Solar Poles for Green Public Infrastructure is a Winning Solution

City of Abilene green infrastructure with PowerStack off-grid solar

The Solution:

The City was working with integrator, STS360 Security, and they suggested a cloud connected Verkada multi-sensor camera, powered by a PowerStack vertical solar pole. An LED light arm could also be attached and run off the same solar pole.

This solution was 100% off-grid, so it could be deployed without the need to access existing electrical infrastructure. That meant no need to dig up the parking lot or shut down use.

By using renewable solar energy, not only was the installation quick and easy, but the city delivered green public infrastructure. The result is no ongoing power costs for the installation, and no added pressure to the electrical grid, or the carbon footprint that kind of power source would have created.

The integrator also chose to install the pole using a concrete-free foundation. This minimized the time to install (and therefore minimized any disruption), as it requires no heavy machinery and can be installed with just 2 people.

For the chosen devices, a similar considered approach was taken. The Verkada multi-sensor camera used by STS360 is low power consumption and essentially packs 4 independent camera systems into a single device. The camera can be run off a single PoE++ connection, meaning it could integrate easily with the PowerStack pole.

Similarly the LED light arm is low voltage, yet powerful enough to provide illumination and integrates seamlessly with the PowerStack pole.

"“PowerStack was the quick, grid-independent choice we needed to meet our deployment goals. It offered reliable solar power that we could access without unnecessary disruption of the area. It’s a game changer in projects like this.”

Powered infrastructure, deployed in hours

PowerStack vertical solar poles can be installed with just two people using mainly hand operated tools. The system uses a specialised winch and concrete-free foundation that reduces installation time and minimizes disruption.

Watch for yourself to see how easy it is to deploy powered infrastructure, with PowerStack.

How it works: A Micro-grid for Green Public and Commercial Infrastructure

PowerStack’s unique integrated design essentially creates a flexible micro-grid for powered infrastructure. It enables deployment without the need for the utility application, trenching or cabling that are required in grid supplied projects. In this way it represents a cost-effective, efficient way to install and run electrical devices for commercial, public and critical infrastructure.

PowerStack also minimizes both the impact to the environment during installation and throughout it’s lifecycle by using renewable solar power. No diesel-fueled heavy machinery to install, no coal-fired power supply – just clean solar energy.
