How using a Solar pole for Security Infrastructure makes deployment easy

Location: Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Seguin, Texas

Product: M50 (15ft) PowerStack solar poles for security application, with 2 Verkada bullet cameras on each along with a Ubiquiti wireless radio unit

Integrator: BrightWatch

Year: 2023

Project: The team at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) were looking to install surveillance hardware at two key sites in their parking lot. This was to enhance safety and security for staff and visitors when entering/exiting the site, particularly after dark.

Challenge: The chosen locations for the security cameras were not within easy access of existing electrical infrastructure. The utility application, extension of power, and the costs and disruption associated with it deemed the project infeasible without a different power source.

The GRMC were looking for something that was quick and easy to install, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area or normal operation of the car park.

PowerStack solar poles for security applications are a winning solution

Solution:

Due to their 100% off-grid nature, PowerStack’s vertical solar poles could be installed without any of the trenching, cabling or regulatory requirements typical of grid access.

Using the concrete-free foundation, a tree-root like system to secure the pole, the PowerStack systems went in without any need for heavy machinery or the wait time for concrete to set. This drastically reduced the time to install and minimized disruption to the area.

PowerStack worked with the integrator on this project, BrightWatch, to deploy two of the 15ft solar poles to run security cameras. The camera chosen was a bullet style from Verkada. Data access and transfer was provided by Ubiquiti wireless radios, also powered by the PowerStack solar pole.

With two cameras on each pole, the installation provided remote monitoring and increased oversight on key access points for the medical center, making it safer for all users. Speaking about the choice of PowerStack for this project, GRMC’s Director of Communications and Security, Sharon Illhardt commented,

"The regulatory requirements and work needed to access grid AC for this kind of infrastructure would have been extremely costly and disruptive. PowerStack got this project the green light because it was off-grid, and so efficient to install. It’s a great outcome for the center and its visitors."

How it works, a vertical solar pole for security infrastructure

PowerStack uses a fully-integrated, 4 sided design to maximize sun capture and create a solar pole that is highly weather – proof and flexible. The system is designed so that the pole height and number of panels changes based on your location, so we can ensure you get reliable power all year round.

Every PowerStack is chosen for its intended site based on mid-winter sunlight hours. So even in more Northerly regions, you can still use PowerStack off-grid solar to run infrastructure, you’d just need more panels.

In a sunny area like Seguin, Texas, you can reliably power two bullet cameras and communications like in this project, all off a 15ft pole. And because PowerStack is highly modular and brand and technology agnostic, the integrator and end user get a real choice over which camera, light, sensor or communications device they want to power.
