PowerStack helping to deliver sustainable built environments for infrastructure clients in new partnership with Innova

PowerStack and Innova team up on solutions for Sustainable built environments

Austin, Texas: Turnkey sustainability solutions provider, Innova, has inked a deal with vertical solar pole provider, PowerStack. The agreement will see Innova represent PowerStack solar power poles as a renewable energy source for infrastructure in green-leaning projects.

Innova is a vertically integrated project management firm focused on decarbonizing the built environment. Innova achieves decarbonization via project execution and product distribution coupled with the one-of-a-kind Planet, People, Profit Impact Platform which defines and assures the utmost climate, social and asset value impact. Innova is focused on creating the ‘healthiest, most environmentally efficient and prosperous places to live, learn, work and play.’

PowerStack’s innovative, modular solar poles provide a decentralized power source for infrastructure including lighting, security and monitoring devices, network deployment and IoT sensors, phone charging, and more. The technology and brand agnostic poles pair with a huge range of devices to create powered solutions that can be deployed anywhere the sun shines.

The agreement will leverage Innova’s network of sustainable infrastructure projects and professionals as ideal partners for deploying PowerStack’s sleek and resilient power poles and bollards across the globe.

Solar micro-grid helps towards sustainable built environments

As an off-grid power source, PowerStack ties in well with Innova’s holistic approach to the projects they work on. Innova takes pride in its thoughtful, ‘Triple-Bottom Line’ approach to taking their clients closer to net zero impact.

They accomplish this through robust economic and sustainable benefits analysis for projects that include buildings, infrastructure, energy collection and storage, clean air and water, and more.

The Innova team is focused on not only replacing unsustainable infrastructure and practices, but also on deploying technology to optimize performance of Sustainable Best Practice designs, materials, and methods.

Taking street and pathway lighting as an example, when deployed traditionally, this can have a significant environmental impact.  First, there is the disruption for trenching and cabling. Then, the gas guzzling machinery needed to install these structures. And finally, these ‘traditionally powered’ light poles use grid power supplied with very little clean energy. From an environmental perspective, there is room for major improvement.

Conversely, PowerStack can power street and pathway lighting, using energy-efficient LED lighting, and powered solely through the sun’s energy. The poles are typically installed in minutes and often include a concrete-free foundation, reducing the environmental impact across the installation process.

Plus, the PowerStack pole can then also be used to power smart sensors that identify pedestrians and accordingly dim/increase the brightness of the lighting fixture when they’re within range, creating an even more energy-efficient solution. One that does not put any additional pressure onto an already overstretched electrical grid.

Speaking about the addition of the PowerStack technology for sustainable built environments to their offering, Innova’s co-founder, John Meyer commented,

“At Innova, we’re focused on providing the best value solutions for our clients, that just happen to be a sustainable best practice and a decarbonizing solution. What’s wonderful about working with PowerStack is that there’s nothing else quite like it in the market – in less than half a day you are installed and operating with lighting, security, broadband and more. At Innova we are especially fond of eliminating the use of large construction machinery to excavate, run underground cable and install concrete foundations. PowerStack’s flexibility is a real innovation in the solar solutions landscape. A product that looks like it’s been architecturally designed, that can run a huge range of different devices, and be configured for different locations and applications. With PowerStack, we can essentially create a tiny microgrid that runs on clean energy. This opens up a whole world of possibilities for sustainable infrastructure and environmental monitoring. We’re looking forward to working with the PowerStack team to bring this technology to new markets!”

A considered approach to solar

PowerStack’s design was created to make it easily deployable in a wider range of different environments than other solar poles, or the alternative ‘traditional flat angled’ solar. With a fully integrated storage system, the pole is extremely low profile. There’s no bulky battery box or other external components. Not only does this make the pole more aesthetically pleasing, it’s also highly flexible.

The core design remains the same, but each PowerStack system is configured for the number of vertical sun hours in each location, based on the shortest day of the year. A project location’s sun hours at the winter solstice will determine the height of the pole, and the number of solar panels and batteries required for the desired wattage.

The modular nature of PowerStack is what enables it to be used for so many different applications and use cases.

Expanding on how PowerStack could be used in sustainable built environments projects with Innova, PowerStack USA’s COO, Jeremy Sigmon commented,

Sustainable built environments use renewable technologies. Pictured is a PowerStack vertical solar pole that uses the sun's energy to power electrical infrastructure. In this application it is running a light arm, CCTV camera and communications router. Pictured against a blue sky background

“We’ve designed the system to overcome a lot of the objections that contractors have around solar. The poles take up very little space and they look great. What's more, they’re flexible, reliable, and durable, too. For companies like Innova, PowerStack represents a micro-grid power source that is fully flexible, so they can deploy it where it’s needed and enable the use of other powered technologies with minimal hassle. The technology integration opportunities are vast. It’s so much more than a solar light pole, and we’re thrilled to be working with Innova who can see its potential.”
